Society of British Neurological Surgeons (SBNS)

The purpose of the Society is the study and advancement of Neurosurgery. This is achieved through the scientific meetings of the Society, through publications arising from deliberations about aspects of Neurosurgical practice and delivery of Neurosurgical services, through fostering professional relationships amongst neurosurgeons and through engagement with the public and bodies involved in the provision of care to patients requiring Neurosurgery.


Professor Peter Whitfield, SNBS President  

Peter is a Consultant Neurosurgeon at University Hospitals NHS Trust Plymouth.  He is also Personal Development and Professionalism Lead at the Peninsula Medical School.  He has wide-ranging clinical interests including trauma, neurovascular surgery and neuro-oncology.  He has published widely, including editing the Neuroanatomy Section of Gray’s Surgical Anatomy and publishing “Traumatic Brain Injury: A multidisciplinary approach” – this is now in its second edition.  Peter is committed to the delivery of training and was Chair of the SAC in Neurosurgery 2017-2020 with responsibility for the re-writing of the Curriculum.  He has previously been the Secretary and Chairman of the National Neurosurgery Selection Board and has been elected as President of the Society of British Neurological Surgeons.   Peter assesses and examines at many levels (Medical Students, MRCS, FRCS, and International FRCS) and is Chairman of the European Board Examination (FEBNS).
