To advance science in the field of cardiothoracic surgery for the benefit of the public by:

  • Encouraging and promoting excellence in the practice of cardiothoracic surgery.
     
  • Encouraging innovation in and scientific understanding of cardiothoracic surgery.
     
  • Promoting, undertaking, encouraging and assisting in research in cardiothoracic surgery and advancing the education of the public in cardiothoracic surgery.
     

Mr Aman Cooner, President SCTS

Aman Coonar is a Consultant Thoracic Surgeon at Royal Papworth Hospital, Cambridge, UK. He serves as President of the Society for Cardiothoracic Surgery in Great Britain & Ireland (SCTS) for 2025 to 2027 and previously was Trustee and then Chair of the Thoracic Surgery Committee.  In 2013, he founded the SCTS Student Engagement Programme, which has since inspired and involved thousands of young people across the UK.

Since 2023, Mr. Coonar is the NHS National Clinical Lead for Thoracic Surgery.  He is also a former President of the Royal Society of Medicine (RSM) Cardiothoracic Section.  He led the MERITS study, the world’s largest investigation into acute kidney injury following thoracic surgery.

He is passionate about innovation, education, teamwork, service improvement, well-being, and patient-centered care.  He has successfully  led national re-commissioning initiatives and spearheaded the development of clinically driven, patient-focused care pathways. He is enthusiastic about joining the Federation of Surgical Specialty Associations (FSSA) to contribute to joint projects and collaborative advocacy efforts.
