BAUS exists to promote the highest standards of practice in urology, for the benefit of patients, by fostering education, research and clinical excellence.
Mr Duncan J Summerton is a Consultant Urological Surgeon at Leicester General Hospital and an Honorary Associate Professor at the University of Leicester.
He graduated from Medical School in 1987 and undertook general surgical and urological training in Plymouth, Southampton and Portsmouth, obtaining Reconstructive Fellowships in the USA (Texas, North Carolina and Arkansas) and at the Institute of Urology in London, with a further Fellowship in advanced Andrological surgery, also at the Institute of Urology, including prosthetic surgery. He is an experienced and frequent implanter of both penile prostheses and artificial urinary sphincters as well as a urethral reconstructionist. He is invited faculty on many advanced surgical courses.
Appointed as a Consultant in 2001 in Portsmouth, he moved to Leicester in 2005 on leaving the Royal Navy after 19 years of active service which included numerous deployments to areas of unrest and conflict throughout the world.
He Chairs the East Midlands Regional Training Committee and formed and still leads the East Midlands Penile cancer Supra-network (6.5 million population) – one of the busiest in the UK. He chaired the European Association of Urology (EAU) Guidelines Panel in Urological Trauma until 2015 and Examines at the Medical School and Nationally for FRCS (Urol), and sat on the Intercollegiate Board of Urology until 2017.
He was elected by his peers to the office of Vice President of the British Association of Urological Surgeons (BAUS) in 2016 after serving terms as Chairman of the Section of Andrology and Genito-Urethral Surgery (AGUS), Regional Representative, Honorary Secretary and became President in June 2018.
